about

Mitch Van Dusen is an experimental publisher by day and a musician by night, inspired by the lifestyle of visionary composer and insurance salesman, Charles Ives. As a musician, he pursues the mastery of improvisation, firstly on the piano, but also on the seperewa, a buzzing Ghanaian harp, played by only a handful of musicians around the world.

His musical experiences have pursued diversity, from smashing pianos with sledgehammers to singing baritone in a 300-person choir at Carnegie Hall.

He is proud to be on the board of the legendary avant-garde education nonprofit, Creative Music Studio.

Hailing from the city of angels, honed and tempered by the steel of New York City, Mitch Van Dusen brings us his debut album, “Love In Crackled Ear”. The result of a unfortunate accident which burst his ear drum, leaving him to hear only pops, static and hiss. In his own words:

“It started almost a decade ago with my grandfather’s funeral followed by a burst ear drum, as I’m falling for the woman who is now my wife.

This improvised composition is the only love song I’ve ever composed. My music is often rooted in abstractions and experiments, but she had no ear for that. She tells the story of walking in on a session where I’m playing an electric guitar with a fork, or a spoon, I don’t recall. The story amuses her but the music did not.

This composition is my attempt to meet her where she is without losing what makes my music mine. The melody and harmony are simple theme and variation, but I’m found in the rhythm. It is perhaps my most experimental foray into rhythm.

This album is actually the second version. The first version came out years ago on Samizdat Records. This version, recorded and produced last year by the great ear of Bill Fiorella and put out by Lone Pine Records is an improvised variation on an original improvised composition.

Listen, share, and thank you.”
